This guided full-day tour explores notable Viking sites around Stockholm, ideal for history enthusiasts interested in Sweden’s medieval past.
Description
Starting in Stockholm, the tour visits key locations on the 'Runriket' trail, showcasing original medieval churches and significant Viking landmarks. Stops include Vallentuna Church and Granby Farm, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Swedish fika of homemade pastries and coffee.
The tour continues to Sigtuna, a town founded in the late Viking era. Here, you’ll explore the ruins of Saint Olaf Church, linked to the Norwegian Viking warrior who converted to Christianity and later became a saint. You will have free time for lunch, shopping, or exploring the town’s streets at your own pace.
Next is Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala), known for its ancient burial mounds dating from the first centuries AD through the Viking era. This site was a spiritual center for Vikings across Scandinavia and hosted Midwinter blot festivals. According to legend, a pagan temple was burned down in 1087, with a church subsequently built atop it, serving as the country’s first archbishopric.
The final stop is the university city of Uppsala, where you will visit Sweden’s main cathedral and receive a brief guided tour of the university area. The return to Stockholm takes about one hour, during which your guide will welcome any questions or further discussion on Viking history and culture.
