Description

There’s more to Stockholm than its Old Town and, on this walking tour, I’ll show you the very best of the city centre. Starting at the MOOD gallery shopping mall, I’ll show you where modern meets medieval in Stockholm City. As you make your way to Lake Mälaren (Lake Malar in English) at Klara Mälarstrand, you’ll learn a lot about life in Sweden. You’ll see the five buildings that are closest to skyscrapers in the city, its cultural centre which is aptly named House of Culture (Kulturhuset), as well as Åhlens City, and Klara Church. You’ll find out why the only tram in Stockholm is named Number 7, and I’ll also share some of the Kingdom of Sweden’s history while you stroll along Vasagatan and the Stockholms Centralstation. Once at City Hall, where the annual Nobel Prize banquet takes place, I’ll tell you about the legends and other stories linked to the great building. Every year, 1,500 guests are invited to the banquet and it takes three months for all the dishes to be washed by hand afterwards. I’ll reveal why the building looks much older than it is and share architectural details that are easily missed. Behind City Hall, I’ll show you the monument to Earl Birger (Birger Jarl's Kenotaf) and reveal his connection to the city. On this tour to Stockholm’s City Hall, you’ll have a chance to: • Find out what the word “Stockholm” means and the legend behind the city’s unusual name • Walk around Sergels Torg Square, named after an 18th-century Swedish architect who had a studio in the area • Discover what the three “V”s are and why every Swede dreams of them • See the city’s smallest island with only one building on it, the Strömsborg • Take in Stockholms-Stocken, a sculpture that resembles a log and represents the city’s founding Along the way, you’ll also hear the answers to questions like: • How many islands are there in Stockholm? • Who was Gustav Vasa? • Is Drottninggatan the longest pedestrian shopping street? • When was Stockholm founded and by whom? • Where in Stockholm City hall can one get married, and how quickly? Join me on this exciting 45-minute walk around the city centre and see a side of Stockholm most tourists miss!
